Baffled tank containers for safe and stable liquid transport

Transporting bulk liquids requires precision, stability, and safety – especially when handling partial loads or high-density cargo. At H&M Tank Containers, we provide baffled tank containers, also known as baffled tanks, designed to address one of the main challenges in liquid logistics: the unwanted movement of liquid inside the tank during transport.

These specialized containers feature internal baffles (solid or perforated walls) that minimize liquid surge, improving both operational safety and transport efficiency for our customers worldwide.

What are baffled tank containers?

A baffled tank container is a type of ISO-certified liquid tank container equipped with internal partitions that divide the tank’s interior into sections. These baffles reduce the forward and sideways movement of liquids when the vehicle accelerates, decelerates, or turns.

Thanks to this design, baffled tanks can safely carry a wide range of products — from chemicals and food-grade liquids to classified or hazardous materials — even when filled between 20% and 80% of the tank’s total capacity.

Why choose baffled tanks for liquid transport?

1. Reduced Liquid Surge

Internal baffles significantly limit liquid motion, preventing sudden shifts that can affect vehicle stability or cause structural stress on the container.

2. Enhanced Transport Safety

By controlling internal movement, baffled tanks ensure a smoother, safer journey – particularly important when carrying hazardous or high-value products.

3. Flexibility for Partial Loads

Unlike standard ISO tanks, baffled tanks can operate efficiently even when not fully loaded, offering flexibility for varying shipment volumes.

4. Versatility in Use

These containers are suitable for a wide range of applications, including chemicals, food products, pharmaceuticals, and specialty liquids.

5. Stable and Efficient Operations

Baffled tanks improve overall handling and reduce wear on transport equipment, making them ideal for both short-distance and intercontinental logistics. Their robust stainless-steel construction and compliance with ISO, IMDG, ADR/RID, and CSC standards ensure global compatibility.

Technical highlights

Baffled tank containers are available in various capacities, typically between 15,000 and 36,000 liters, and are built from stainless steel (316L or 1.4404) for durability and corrosion resistance.

Common specifications include:

  • Design pressure: 4.0 bar
  • Test pressure: 6.0 bar
  • Temperature range: -40°C to +130°C
  • Vertical V-shaped baffle configurations
  • Full walkway with safe top access
  • Options for bottom or top discharge, steam heating, insulation, and cleaning hatches

Each configuration can be tailored to meet specific operational and regulatory requirements.

Applications of baffled tank containers

Baffled tanks are widely used across industries that demand stability and precision during liquid transport:

  • Food & Beverage – edible oils, juices, liquid sugars
  • Pharmaceuticals – APIs and solvent-based products
  • Chemicals – classified or hazardous liquids under ADR/IMDG regulations
  • Specialty Products: high-density or viscous materials such as slurries or syrups

They are especially valuable when transporting partial loads or high-density cargo, where surge control and weight balance are critical.

Horizontal vs. Vertical baffles

The choice between horizontal and vertical baffles depends on the cargo and transport conditions.

  • Horizontal baffles — to minimize front-to-back surge during acceleration or braking.
  • Vertical baffles to control side-to-side slosh on uneven or winding routes. At H&M Tank Containers, these vertical baffles are positioned in a V-shape for optimal stability and surge reduction.

Both designs improve tank stability and protect the cargo throughout transit.
